Supporting Children with Autism Nutritionally

Many children with autism have sensory issues around food, which often leads to very limited diets. When the same few foods are eaten day after day, it’s common to see significant nutrient gaps — especially in minerals that support mood, behaviour, digestion and nervous‑system regulation.
Hair mineral testing can help identify which nutrients are low, which are out of balance, and which patterns may be contributing to the symptoms you’re seeing. It gives a clearer picture of what your child’s body actually needs, rather than guessing or trialling supplements blindly. (A generic multi vitamin is rarely enough).
Hair Mineral Testing
Hair mineral testing is a simple, non‑invasive way to assess longer‑term mineral patterns in the body. A small sample of hair is taken from the back of the head and analysed for key minerals and trace elements, including zinc, magnesium, selenium, calcium and copper. It also looks at mineral ratios, which can give insight into stress levels, nervous‑system regulation, digestion and how well the body is using nutrients day‑to‑day.
Alongside essential minerals, hair testing also screens for toxic metals such as aluminium, lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium. These metals can interfere with mineral absorption, contribute to behavioural or sensory challenges, and place additional stress on the nervous system. Seeing both the nutrient levels and the presence of toxic metals gives a clearer picture of what the child’s body may be struggling with.
Because hair mineral analysis reflects several months of mineral activity, it often reveals patterns that blood tests miss — especially in children with fluctuating stress, sensory overload or gut issues. This makes it a useful tool for understanding what an autistic child’s body genuinely needs, and for guiding targeted nutritional support in a way that feels realistic for family life.
Supporting Children with Autism Nutritionally
Nutritional support works best when we understand what’s happening beneath the surface — how the child’s body is coping, what it may be missing and what feels safe for them day‑to‑day. Once those needs are supported, children often feel more regulated, less overwhelmed and more able to cope with small shifts in food and routine.
Parents often notice that once nutrient gaps are identified and supported properly, their child becomes calmer, more consistent and more tolerant of new foods. These shifts come from supporting the underlying biochemistry, not from pushing dietary changes. This is why targeted nutritional support can make such a meaningful difference for autistic children who rely on a very limited diet.
How I can help
I use Hair Mineral Testing to understand what your child’s body is actually asking for. From there, we create a clear, steady plan that feels manageable for real family life — no overwhelm, no long supplement lists, and no pressure around food.
