Wired at Bedtime? Why Histamine May Be Part of the Picture

Does your child struggle to switch off at bedtime? Histamine could be part of the picture.

If your child seems completely wired at night — flushed, chatty, anxious, sweaty, restless, or suddenly full of energy — it may not be “behaviour”. For some children, it’s histamine, a chemical that should naturally drop in the evening to help the brain shift into rest mode. When it stays high, children feel alert, emotional, and unable to settle — often long before parents realise histamine might be involved.

What High Histamine Can Look Like at Bedtime

When histamine is too high or isn’t being cleared well, evenings can become a pattern of:

  • difficulty settling to sleep

  • a sudden “second wind”

  • emotional ups and downs

  • flushed cheeks or overheating

  • sweating at night

  • restless sleep or frequent waking

  • an increase in repetitive or OCD‑type behaviours in the evening

These patterns are common across PANS, PANDAS, autism and ADHD, especially when gut health and inflammation are part of the picture.

Short‑Term Support You Can Try

Short‑term steps don’t need to be complicated. Many parents start by gently lowering the histamine load and supporting the body’s natural breakdown pathways.

Lower the histamine load

A simple food and symptom diary can help spot patterns. Some children react to high‑histamine foods such as leftovers, fermented foods, chocolate, and strawberries. Being mindful with omega‑3 supplements and certain probiotics can also help, as some strains naturally increase histamine.

Support histamine breakdown

Nutrients like vitamin C and zinc are natural antihistamines and can support the body’s ability to clear histamine. These are gentle, accessible starting points that many families find helpful.

These small changes often make evenings calmer without needing to overhaul everything at once.

Next Steps: Looking at the Bigger Picture

If histamine keeps showing up in your child’s pattern, the next step is understanding why it’s building up. For many children, genetics, gut health, and immune activation all play a role. Supporting these root causes is what creates long‑term change, not just short‑term symptom relief.
